Day 17: hearts!! {31 days of watercolor}

today my sweet cakes and i were working on a {different} project when she looked up at me wide eyed and reminded me ever so sweetly

"mommy, you have to do your watercolor-a-day!"

"oh i do, don't i... what do you think i should do today?"

"uhm, hearts!"

great idea sweet girl!!

Day 16: her majesty, watercolor {31 days of watercolor}

okay, so my calligraphy pen got the best of me!

it was lying out today after last nights post and well, i had to pick it up again today :)

but today i realized how effective watercolor is in being an accent to another artistic medium. i didn't really think of it that way yesterday. i saw it more of a way to just add color... to color in really. 

but today i realized that i need to combine the use of different mediums more often in my work... to bring in the unexpected which in turn adds substance. watercolor really adds volumes because of it's luminosity, it's variations, it's edges, it's unexpected beauty.... should i keep going?!!

so anyway, for the lover of letters in me. 

here, my friends.....

Day 15: whatever you do {31 days of watercolor}

 Calligraphy and watercolor combo for today, Day 15.

Just a tad bit of both because it's been one of those long hard days...

I've been thinking on this verse ever since the beginning of this 31 day project. I've been wanting to incorporate it in some way because it just hit home for me... got my focus in the right place. I think it could pretty much sum it up for any of us because it says whatever you do.

I think I could continue to rewrite this... and repaint this all day long, really. Because I'm a wanna-be perfectionist when it comes to calligraphy. I tend to be overly picky on my own work. But today after a long day this is where it stops.

Day 14: color on a brush {31 days of watercolor}

i love the typical work of Mark Rothko and it's blocks of color

it's simple genius and it works
i can stare at it for what seems forever...
i remember the first time looking at it and trying to figure out which parts he painted first... background, foreground, etc etc-


he worked on a large scale and it is said wanted his viewer to ideally stand 18" from his piece so that they would feel immersed in the piece.
interesting!!

if you don't know his work and you google his name this is what you'll get....

{that picture grouping of his work looks great on it's own, don't you think?}

so for today i am drawing on his later works for inspiration...

although he used mainly oil, and i'm working in watercolor

he painted on a large scale canvas, and i'm using small pieces of watercolor paper (7.5"x11")

ahhh the simple freedom of working with color next to each other
mixing and matching...

and watching the brushstrokes call the shots~

FUN!!

you're really going to want to try this
because it's low pressure and super fun!

i love seeing brushstrokes
{it always reminds me that there was an artist behind the work}

*watercolor paper... or any kind if you just want to try now :)
*paints... of any kind really bc i know you just want to try it asap :)
*brush... i used a 3/4" but whatever you have

Day 13: picking a pumpkin {31 days of watercolor}

we had so much fun at the pumpkin patch on friday that today i wanted to attempt to capture that precious moment of picking out a pumpkin!

i've said it before and i'll probably keep on sayin it until day 31...

i just LOVE how loosely i can work in watercolor.

it really doesn't have to be picture perfect to convey the essence of a scene or object or color.

it just flows freely. 

i like how it makes me not strive for perfection... 

because sometimes that's what i need... to just let things be how they are

to let go of the control for a while

anyway, perfect capturing is what a camera is for right?

watercolor lends itself to atmosphere and emotion. 

and i am growing to love it!!
